What the counts do and do not mean

Florida authorises the business and registers the individual contractor who qualifies it. DEP permits septic systems in some counties and the county health department does it in the rest, so the permit office depends on where you are — but the licence check is always DEP.

The number against each county is how many licensed businesses give that county as their address — not how many will travel to it. A Florida licence is granted by Florida DEP and is valid across the state, so a company two counties away can legally do the work. In a rural county the listed handful is rarely the real choice set, which is why every county page here also lists its neighbours.

Business authorisations and contractor registrations each carry their own expiration date, shown on every listing. DEP's list is generated live from its database, so what appears here is what DEP held on the day it was fetched.

The licence types in this table

• Businesses — a business licensed for the work that may contract for septic system installation, repair and maintenance.
• Master contractors — an individual who holds Florida's senior septic registration, which additionally covers system maintenance and servicing.
• Registered contractors — an individual who is registered to install, repair and alter onsite sewage treatment and disposal systems.
