What the counts do and do not mean

Virginia licenses the contractor, and every listing here carries the licence number, so DPOR's lookup will confirm its status in seconds. The Virginia Department of Health, which permits the work, does not license the contractor.

The number against each county is how many licensed businesses give that county as their address — not how many will travel to it. A Virginia licence is granted by Virginia DPOR and is valid across the state, so a company two counties away can legally do the work. In a rural county the listed handful is rarely the real choice set, which is why every county page here also lists its neighbours.

Contractor licences carry an expiration date, shown on every listing. DPOR republishes the regulant lists roughly every five business days.

• Contractors — a business licensed for the work that installs, repairs and replaces septic systems as a licensed business.
• Installers — an individual who is personally licensed to install onsite sewage systems.
• Operators — an individual who is personally licensed to operate and maintain onsite sewage systems.
• Soil evaluators — an individual who evaluates soil to decide whether and what kind of septic system a site can take.
